Johannes Kohlmann (1864 to 1923)
Spirited, visionary and inventive: Johannes Kohlmann, descendant of an old charcoal-burner family, was animated by inner fire throughout his life. The South German moved to Basel at an early age, where he registered pioneering patents as a chemist. Despite his success, he remained a simple man who loved traditional things and appreciated good food. That’s probably why he sat at the radio for nights, meticulously recording what he was looking for: typical regional recipes with a history, like those served at KOHLMANNS today.

The cookbook from Kohlmanns kitchen contains detailed records of what was served at the Kohlmanns’ social home on feast days or in everyday life. A book that covers perhaps 50 years of personal kitchen history.
This cookbook brings together recipes that have been served up again and again with pleasure. Dishes that the fun-loving Kohlmann family brought together with relatives from Baden and Alsace, with friends and acquaintances at the big table and prepared on the open fire.
The kitchen of Restaurant KOHLMANNS is constantly developing and reinterpreting the dishes of the Kohlmann family. Whether the fire cake prepared in the wood-fired oven or the classic meat loaf – the best from the region awaits you.
FOOD & DRINK
Enjoy regional, seasonal and freshly prepared dishes. At noon we serve our weekly changing lunch menus, in the afternoon we recommend our homemade cakes and in the evening our à la carte menu impresses with varied dishes. Matching you will find fine wines from our wine cellar.
